India’s PC and Tablet Market to Grow 5% to 19.6 Million Units in 2022

Despite a sharp decline in the fourth quarter of 2022, last year was a successful year for India’s PC market (desktops, laptops and tablets), with shipments up 5 percent to 19.6 million units, a new report says.

Laptop shipments fell 7 percent to 11 million units, while desktop and tablet shipments rose significantly, 37 percent to 3.2 million and 21 percent to 5.4 million units in 2022, according to market research firm Canalys.

HP led the Indian PC market (excluding tablets) with over 30 percent market share in both the fourth quarter of 2022 and the full year.

Lenovo ranked second, but suffered a 31 percent drop in shipments in the fourth quarter of 2022.

However, Lenovo’s total 2022 shipments increased 3 percent compared to 2021, and its commercial business strengthened.

Dell and Acer took third and fourth place, while Apple secured the final spot in the top five for the fourth quarter of 2022, overtaking Asus.

According to the report, Apple overtook Samsung in the last quarter of 2022 to take the lead in the Indian tablet market.

“Indian consumers spent money on gadgets in the first half of 2022, but demand waned quickly, leading to a weak Christmas season for sellers and retailers,” said analyst Ashweej Aithal.

Canalys expects PC and tablet shipments in India to decline 6 percent in 2023 to 18 million units.

This is a smaller drop than the global market, which is expected to contract by 9 percent.

Although India is affected by the weakness of the global economy this year, the country’s GDP growth forecasts are still relatively positive compared to other major markets.

“Education will be an important segment for PCs and tablets in India this year and beyond,” Aithal said.
